The Gulf of Mexico Deepwater Horizon: The after effects on fish

Even though there were low concentrations of oil minerals in the Gulf of Mexico water from the Deepwater Horizon spill, fish were partly affected by the toxins from the oil. Researchers took a combined field and laboratory study and it showed widespread effects of the oil spill on the fish in Louisiana marshes. Gene expression in tissues of some of the fish (killifish) was predicted oil spill effects such as developmental abnomalities and death, say the scientists. Also indicated impairment of fish reproduction. Fish gill tissues (used for breathing) were damaged and had altered the protein expression.
